Seconds to Hours Converter

Turn any number of seconds into hours — as a decimal, and as a clean hours-minutes-seconds breakdown. The result updates as you type, with nothing to calculate by hand.

Enter seconds

Works with any whole or decimal number of seconds.

Enter 0 or a positive number. Decimal values like 90.5 are fine.

What this seconds to hours converter does

This tool answers a question that shows up whenever a duration is logged in raw seconds: how many hours is that? Type a number of seconds and it returns the equivalent in hours three ways — as decimal hours for scheduling or billing, as an hours-minutes-seconds breakdown for reading at a glance, and as total minutes. Everything recalculates the moment you change the input.

It's built for the moments when a duration only exists in seconds — a video's exact runtime, an API response time rolled up over a day, a sensor log, a script's total execution time — and you need it in hours to compare against a schedule or a budget.

How to use it

Two fields to read, one to fill in.

  1. Enter the number of seconds.Type any whole or decimal number — 90, 5400, or 12.5 all work.
  2. Read the converted hours.Decimal hours, the hours-minutes-seconds breakdown, and total minutes appear immediately.
  3. Copy or save the result.Copy it to your clipboard, print it, or download it as a CSV row for your records.

How the conversion works

The conversion is one division. There are 3,600 seconds in an hour — 60 seconds in a minute, times 60 minutes in an hour — so dividing a number of seconds by 3,600 gives the equivalent in hours. The hours-minutes-seconds breakdown then splits that value back into whole hours, whole minutes, and remaining seconds, which is closer to how most people actually read a duration.

Worked example · 5,400 seconds
5400 ÷ 3600 = 1.5 hours (decimal)
5400 seconds = 1 whole hour (3600s) + 1800 seconds remaining
1800 seconds = 30 minutes, 0 seconds
Breakdown = 1h 30m 00s
5400 ÷ 60 = 90 total minutes

Decimal hours vs. hours, minutes and seconds

Decimal hours count in base 10, but a clock counts minutes and seconds in base 60 — so the two don't share the same fractional part. 1.5 hours is 1h 30m 00s, not 1h 50m, because 0.5 of an hour is 30 minutes (0.5 × 60), not 50. If you only need that one step in isolation, the dedicated time to decimal converter does it on its own.

Who uses it, and for what

  • Developers & QA engineers converting elapsed-seconds metrics from logs or dashboards into hours for reporting.
  • Video & audio editors turning an exact runtime in seconds into hours and minutes for a production schedule.
  • Scientists & analysts converting sensor or experiment durations logged in seconds into hours for analysis.
  • Anyone tracking time — workouts, commutes, or a task that was timed to the second — who needs the total in hours.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is 3,600 seconds?

3,600 seconds is exactly 1 hour, since an hour is defined as 3,600 seconds. Divide any number of seconds by 3,600 to get decimal hours.

How do I convert seconds to hours by hand?

Divide the number of seconds by 3,600, since there are 3,600 seconds in an hour (60 seconds × 60 minutes). The whole number part is the hours; the remainder can be split into minutes and seconds.

Why does the decimal value look different from the hours-minutes-seconds breakdown?

Decimal hours count in base 10, while a clock counts minutes and seconds in base 60. So 1.5 hours displays as 1h 30m 00s, not 1h 50m, because 0.5 of an hour equals 30 minutes.

Does the converter round the result?

Decimal hours are shown to up to four decimal places with trailing zeros trimmed. The hours-minutes-seconds breakdown rounds to the nearest whole second when you enter a fractional number of seconds.

Can I convert hours back to seconds?

Yes — use the companion hours to seconds converter for the reverse direction.

Is there a limit to how many seconds I can enter?

No practical limit. The converter handles large totals, such as the seconds in a day or a year, the same way it handles small ones.

Is my data stored or uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Accuracy & sources

Results come from standard time arithmetic: seconds are divided by 3,600 to get decimal hours, and split into whole hours, whole minutes, and a remainder of seconds to build the hours-minutes-seconds breakdown, exactly as shown in how the conversion works. There is no proprietary formula, and every worked example on this page has been independently verified by hand.

The relationship between seconds, minutes and hours used here — 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds — follows the definition set out in the NIST Guide to the SI, Units Outside the SI, which lists the minute and hour among the non-SI units accepted for use alongside the International System of Units (of which the second is a base unit).
