What this hours to seconds converter does

This tool turns a number of hours into an exact count of seconds, and back again. Type a value into the Hours field and the Seconds field updates instantly — or do it the other way around, since both fields are live. Alongside the main result you also get the equivalent in minutes and in decimal days, so you don't need a second tool for those.

It's built for the moments where the multiplication is easy to get wrong under pressure — converting a video's runtime for a script, setting a countdown in an app, or checking how many seconds a 2.5-hour meeting actually takes up on a shared calendar.

How to use it

Two fields, either one can be the starting point.

  1. Enter a number of hours.Whole numbers and decimals both work — try 2, 0.5, or 1.75.
  2. Read the seconds total. The big number and the Seconds field update the moment you stop typing.
  3. Or start from seconds instead.Type a value into the Seconds field and the Hours field converts it back automatically.
  4. Copy, print or download.Reuse the result in a message, on paper, or as a CSV row for your records.

How the conversion works

The relationship between hours and seconds is fixed: there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, so one hour always equals 3,600 seconds. Converting hours to seconds is just multiplying by 3,600; converting seconds to hours is dividing by 3,600.

Worked example · 2.5 hours
2.5 hours × 3600 = 9,000 seconds
Check: 9,000 ÷ 3600 = 2.5 hours

Why 3,600?

It comes from the two nested 60s that define clock time: 60 seconds make a minute, and 60 minutes make an hour, so 60 × 60 = 3,600. The same factor is why an hour is also 60 minutes — the hours to minutes converter handles that middle step on its own if that's all you need.

Fractional and negative hours

Decimal hours convert the same way — 0.25 hours (a quarter hour) is 900 seconds, and 1.75 hours is 6,300 seconds. If you're working with a time offset rather than a plain duration, negative values multiply through correctly too.

Need the number of days a duration spans instead? The hours to days converter lays out the same math on its own, and the general time unit converter covers every combination in one place.

Who uses it, and for what

  • Developers converting a duration into seconds for a timer, a setTimeout, a TTL value, or an API field that expects seconds.
  • Video and audio editors reconciling a runtime given in hours with a timeline that counts in seconds or frames.
  • Students and engineers doing unit-conversion problems that mix hours with SI-based quantities like speed, rate, or frequency.
  • Event and broadcast planners checking exactly how many seconds a scheduled block — a meeting, a stream, an ad slot — takes up.

If seconds are your starting point instead of hours, the seconds to hours converter gives the identical result with the input roles reversed. For a plain gap between two clock times rather than a raw duration, try the time duration calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hours to seconds?

Multiply the number of hours by 3,600, since there are 3,600 seconds in one hour (60 seconds × 60 minutes). For example, 2 hours × 3,600 = 7,200 seconds. This converter does the multiplication for you as you type.

What is the formula for converting hours to seconds?

Seconds = hours × 3,600. To go the other way, hours = seconds ÷ 3,600. Both directions work in this tool — enter a value in either field.

How many seconds are in one hour?

Exactly 3,600: 60 seconds in a minute, times 60 minutes in an hour.

Can I convert seconds back to hours with this tool?

Yes. Type a value into the Seconds field and the Hours field updates automatically. The seconds to hours converter gives the same result with seconds as the primary field, if that's the direction you'd rather land on.

Does this handle fractional or decimal hours?

Yes. Decimal values like 1.5 or 0.25 hours convert correctly to 5,400 and 900 seconds. Negative values are also multiplied through correctly if you're working with a time offset rather than a plain duration.

Is this tool free, and does it store my data?

It's completely free with no sign-up. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.

Accuracy & sources

Results come from fixed-ratio arithmetic: the value you enter is multiplied or divided by 3,600, exactly as shown in how the conversion works. There is no rounding beyond standard floating-point display, and every example on this page has been independently verified by hand.

The second is the SI base unit of time, and the hour is one of the non-SI units accepted for use with the SI, with a fixed relationship of 1 h = 3,600 s defined in the BIPM SI Brochure, the international reference for the metric system.
