How to convert 24-hour time to 12-hour time

The whole rule is about the hour — the minutes never change.

  1. Midnight hour (00).00:00–00:59 becomes 12:00–12:59 AM. So 00:30 is 12:30 AM.
  2. Morning hours (01–11).The hour stays the same and the label is AM. 09:15 is 9:15 AM.
  3. Noon hour (12).12 stays 12 and becomes PM. 12:45 is 12:45 PM.
  4. Afternoon & evening (13–23).Subtract 12 from the hour and the label is PM. 14:30 − 12 = 2:30 PM.
Worked example · 1830 (military) to 12-hour
Read the hour: 18, minutes 30
18 is in the 13–23 range → subtract 12: 18 − 12 = 6, label PM
Minutes stay the same → 6:30 PM

The one that trips everyone up: midnight vs. noon

The single most common time mistake isn’t in the afternoon hours — it’s at 12. Plainly: 12:00 AM is midnight (the start of the day, written 00:00) and 12:00 PM is noon (written 12:00). Because “AM” means before midday and “PM” after, the switch happens at 12, which is why it feels backwards. When it matters, the 24-hour form removes all doubt: 00:00 is midnight, 12:00 is noon.

Frequently asked questions

What is 14:00 in 12-hour time?

14:00 is 2:00 PM. For any 24-hour time from 13:00 to 23:00, subtract 12 from the hour and add PM.

Is 12:00 AM midnight or noon?

12:00 AM is midnight — the start of the day, written 00:00 in 24-hour time. 12:00 PM is noon, written 12:00.

00:00 is midnight, the very start of a new day. In 12-hour time it is written 12:00 AM.

How do I convert military time to standard 12-hour time?

Read the first two digits as the hour: 00 becomes 12 AM, 01–11 stay AM, 12 is 12 PM, and 13–23 become 1–11 PM. For example, 1430 is 2:30 PM.
