What this hours to minutes converter does

This tool turns a number of hours into minutes, or minutes into hours, without you doing the multiplication or division by hand. Type a value and it returns the total three ways: as total minutes, as an hours-and-minutes breakdown, and as total seconds. Everything updates as you type — there's no button to press.

It's built for the moments where a duration is given in one unit and you need it in the other — a meeting length quoted in hours that a scheduling tool wants in minutes, or a countdown in minutes you'd rather read as hours and minutes.

How to use it

One field, read the answer instantly.

  1. Enter a number of hours.Whole numbers or decimals both work — try 2.5 for two and a half hours.
  2. Read the minutes total. The total minutes figure appears instantly, alongside an hours-and-minutes breakdown and total seconds.
  3. Swap direction if you'd rather start from minutes.Tap Swap and the same field becomes a minutes input, converting to hours instead.
  4. Copy, print, or download the result.Send it in a message, print it, or save it as a CSV row for your records.

How the conversion works

The conversion factor is fixed and simple: 1 hour equals 60 minutes, always. To go from hours to minutes, multiply by 60. To go from minutes to hours, divide by 60. Everything else on this page — the breakdown, the seconds — follows from that one number.

Worked example · 2.5 hours to minutes
2.5 hours × 60 = 150 minutes
Whole hours: 2, remainder = 150 − (2 × 60) = 30 leftover minutes
So 2.5 hours = 2 hr 30 min
In seconds: 150 × 60 = 9,000 seconds

Converting minutes to hours

Going the other way is the same factor in reverse. Divide the number of minutes by 60: 100 minutes ÷ 60 = 1.67 hours. That decimal isn't as easy to read at a glance as the hours-and-minutes form — 1 hr 40 min — which is why the converter shows both.

Decimal hours vs. hours and minutes

Decimal hours (1.67) are what a spreadsheet or payroll system multiplies by a rate; hours and minutes (1 hr 40 min) are how people actually read a clock. If you need to move between those two written forms on their own, the time to decimal and decimal to time tools do just that step in isolation.

Who uses it, and for what

  • Meeting & event planners converting a block booked in hours into minutes for a scheduling tool that only accepts minutes.
  • Freelancers & contractors turning a logged hours figure into minutes for a time-tracking or invoicing system.
  • Students & test-takers converting an exam or session length between the two units to plan pacing.
  • Anyone reading a duration — a workout, a commute, a video — who wants it in whichever unit is easier to picture.

If you're starting from a pair of clock times rather than a duration already in hours, the hours calculator or time duration calculator will get you to a duration first.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes are in a given number of hours?

Multiply the number of hours by 60. For example, 2.5 hours × 60 = 150 minutes. The converter does this instantly and also shows the hours-and-minutes breakdown.

How do I convert minutes back into hours?

Divide the number of minutes by 60, or tap the Swap button on this page to flip the converter into minutes-to-hours mode without retyping anything.

What's the difference between decimal hours and an hours-and-minutes breakdown?

Decimal hours express the whole value as one number with a fraction, like 2.50 hours. The hours-and-minutes breakdown splits the same value into whole hours plus leftover minutes, like 2 hr 30 min. Both describe the same duration in a different shape.

Why does the minutes total show a decimal sometimes?

That happens when you're converting minutes to hours and the minutes don't divide evenly by 60 — for example 100 minutes is 1.67 hours. Going from hours to minutes, the total is only a decimal if you entered a fractional number of hours.

Can I convert large values, like a full day in hours?

Yes. There's no upper limit — 24 hours converts to 1,440 minutes (86,400 seconds), and the tool handles much larger numbers just as accurately.

What if I enter a negative number?

The converter shows a warning and withholds a result, since a negative span of hours or minutes isn't meaningful here. Enter a positive value to see the conversion.

Is the converter free and private?

Yes. It's free with no sign-up, and the conversion runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

Accuracy & sources

Results come from standard time arithmetic: the value you enter is multiplied or divided by 60, exactly as shown in how the conversion works. There is no rounding shortcut or hidden adjustment, and every worked example on this page has been independently verified by hand.

The 60-minute hour used here matches the conversion factor listed in the BIPM SI Brochure, which lists the minute and hour among the non-SI units accepted for use with the International System of Units.
