What this minutes to hours converter does
This tool answers a small but constant question: how many hours is that many minutes? Type a number of minutes and it returns the equivalent in hours three ways — as decimal hours for payroll or scheduling, as an hours-and-minutes breakdown for reading at a glance, and as total seconds. Every figure updates the moment you change the input, so there's no button to press.
It's built for the moments when a duration only exists in minutes — a call log, a video's runtime, a meeting block, an exported time-tracking report — and you need it in hours to compare against a schedule, bill a client, or fill in a field that only accepts hours.
How to use it
Two fields to read, one to fill in.
- Enter the number of minutes.Type any whole or decimal number — 45, 90, or 12.5 all work.
- Read the converted hours.Decimal hours, the hours-and-minutes breakdown, and total seconds appear immediately.
- Copy or save the result.Copy it to your clipboard, print it, or download it as a CSV row for your records.
How the conversion works
The conversion is one division. There are 60 minutes in an hour by definition, so dividing a number of minutes by 60 gives the equivalent in hours. The hours-and-minutes breakdown then splits that value back into a whole number of hours plus a remaining number of minutes, which is closer to how most people actually read a duration.
130 minutes = 2 whole hours (120 min) + 10 minutes remaining
Breakdown = 2h 10m
130 × 60 = 7,800 seconds
Decimal hours vs. hours and minutes
Decimal hours count in base 10, but a clock counts minutes in base 60 — so the two don't share the same fractional part. 1.5 hours is 1h 30m, not 1h 50m, because 0.5 of an hour is 30 minutes (0.5 × 60), not 50. If you only need that one step in isolation, the dedicated time to decimal converter does it on its own.
Going the other direction
Need hours in minutes instead? The companion hours to minutes converter multiplies by 60 instead of dividing. Both live under the time unit converters hub alongside seconds, days and weeks conversions.

Who uses it, and for what
- Payroll & HR teams converting minute-based punch data into decimal hours for invoicing or timesheets.
- Freelancers & contractors turning a session logged in minutes into billable hours.
- Call centers & support teams rolling up total call-minutes into hours for reporting.
- Students & anyone tracking time — study sessions, workouts, or a video's runtime — who need a duration in hours instead of minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is 90 minutes?
90 minutes is 1.5 hours, or 1 hour 30 minutes. Divide the minutes by 60 to get decimal hours: 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5.
How do I convert minutes to hours by hand?
Divide the number of minutes by 60, since there are 60 minutes in an hour. The whole number part is the hours; multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the remaining minutes.
Why does the decimal value look different from the hours-and-minutes breakdown?
Decimal hours count in base 10, while a clock counts minutes in base 60. So 1.5 hours displays as 1h 30m, not 1h 50m, because 0.5 of an hour equals 30 minutes.
Does the converter round the result?
Decimal hours are shown to up to four decimal places with trailing zeros trimmed. The hours-and-minutes breakdown rounds to the nearest whole minute when you enter a fractional number of minutes.
Can I convert hours back to minutes?
Yes — use the companion hours to minutes converter for the reverse direction.
Is there a limit to how many minutes I can enter?
No practical limit. The converter handles large totals, such as the minutes in a week or a year, the same way it handles small ones.
Is my data stored or uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.
Accuracy & sources
Results come from standard time arithmetic: minutes are divided by 60 to get decimal hours, and split into whole hours plus a remainder to build the hours-and-minutes breakdown, exactly as shown in how the conversion works. There is no proprietary formula, and every worked example on this page has been independently verified by hand.
The relationship between minutes, hours and seconds used here — 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds — follows the definition set out in the NIST Guide to the SI, Units Outside the SI, which lists the minute and hour among the non-SI units accepted for use alongside the International System of Units.
