What this minutes to seconds converter does
This tool turns a number of minutes into an exact count of seconds, and back again. Type a value into the Minutes field and the Seconds field updates instantly — or do it the other way around, since both fields are live. Alongside the main result you also get the equivalent in decimal hours and in milliseconds, so you don't need a second tool for those.
It's built for the moments where the multiplication is easy to fumble under pressure — setting a countdown timer, converting a track length for a script, or working out how many seconds a 12.5-minute interval actually is.
How to use it
Two fields, either one can be the starting point.
- Enter a number of minutes.Whole numbers and decimals both work — try 5, 0.5, or 12.25.
- Read the seconds total. The big number and the Seconds field update the moment you stop typing.
- Or start from seconds instead.Type a value into the Seconds field and the Minutes field converts it back automatically.
- Copy, print or download.Reuse the result in a message, on paper, or as a CSV row for your records.
How the conversion works
The relationship between minutes and seconds is fixed: there are 60 seconds in every minute. Converting minutes to seconds is just multiplying by 60; converting seconds to minutes is dividing by 60.
60 = 330 secondsCheck: 330 ÷ 60 = 5.5 minutes
Why 60?
The 60-second minute goes back to the sexagesimal (base-60) system used by ancient Babylonian astronomers, and it's carried through into every modern clock. The same factor governs the next step up too — the minutes to hours converter divides by 60 again to reach hours.
Fractional and negative minutes
Decimal minutes convert the same way — 0.5 minutes (half a minute) is 30 seconds, and 2.25 minutes is 135 seconds. If you're working with a time offset rather than a plain duration, negative values multiply through correctly too.
Quick examples
Common minute values and their exact seconds total.
| Minutes | Seconds | Hours | Milliseconds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 30 | 0.0083 | 30,000 |
| 1 | 60 | 0.0167 | 60,000 |
| 5 | 300 | 0.0833 | 300,000 |
| 15 | 900 | 0.2500 | 900,000 |
| 30 | 1,800 | 0.5000 | 1,800,000 |
| 60 | 3,600 | 1.0000 | 3,600,000 |
Need the number of hours a duration spans instead? The minutes to hours converter lays out that step on its own, and the general time unit converter covers every combination in one place.
Who uses it, and for what
- Developers converting a duration into seconds for a timer, a
setTimeout, a TTL value, or an API field that expects seconds. - Video and audio editors reconciling a track or clip length given in minutes with a timeline that counts in seconds or milliseconds.
- Students and engineers working through unit-conversion problems that mix minutes with SI-based quantities.
- Coaches and event organisers checking exactly how many seconds a timed interval, drill, or segment takes up.
If seconds are your starting point instead of minutes, the seconds to minutes converter gives the identical result with the input roles reversed. For a plain gap between two clock times rather than a raw duration, try the time duration calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to seconds?
Multiply the number of minutes by 60, since there are 60 seconds in one minute. For example, 5 minutes × 60 = 300 seconds. This converter does the multiplication for you as you type.
What is the formula for converting minutes to seconds?
Seconds = minutes × 60. To go the other way, minutes = seconds ÷ 60. Both directions work in this tool — enter a value in either field.
How many seconds are in one minute?
Exactly 60 — that's the definition of a minute on the clock.
Can I convert seconds back to minutes with this tool?
Yes. Type a value into the Seconds field and the Minutes field updates automatically. The seconds to minutes converter gives the same result with seconds as the primary field, if that's the direction you'd rather land on.
Does this handle fractional or decimal minutes?
Yes. Decimal values like 2.5 or 0.75 minutes convert correctly to 150 and 45 seconds. Negative values are also multiplied through correctly if you're working with a time offset rather than a plain duration.
Is this tool free, and does it store my data?
It's completely free with no sign-up. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.
Accuracy & sources
Results come from fixed-ratio arithmetic: the value you enter is multiplied or divided by 60, exactly as shown in how the conversion works. There is no rounding beyond standard floating-point display, and every example on this page has been independently verified by hand.
The second is the SI base unit of time, and the minute is one of the non-SI units accepted for use with the SI, with a fixed relationship of 1 min = 60 s defined in the BIPM SI Brochure, the international reference for the metric system.
