What this online timer does
This is a plain, no-frills countdown timer: set a length of time — hours, minutes, seconds, or any combination — and it counts down live, with an audible alarm the moment it hits zero. There's nothing to install and nothing to configure beyond the duration itself.
It's built for the moments where you just need something to count down in the background: a load of laundry, a batch of cookies, a timed exercise set, a study block. Tap a preset or type your own duration, press Start, and get on with whatever you're doing until the alarm sounds.
How to use it
Four steps — most people never touch anything past the preset chips.
- Set the length.Type hours, minutes and seconds directly, or tap a quick-start preset like 5 or 20 minutes.
- Press Start. The countdown begins immediately and keeps counting even if you switch to another browser tab.
- Pause or extend it if you need to.Pause and resume at any point, or tap Add 1 Min to give yourself extra time without starting over.
- Wait for the alarm.A sound plays and the display flashes "Time's up!" the moment the countdown reaches zero.
How the countdown stays accurate
The timer doesn't simply subtract one second at a time — browsers can slow that kind of loop down when a tab isn't in focus, which causes drift. Instead, the moment you press Start, the tool calculates the exact clock time the countdown should end and stores that. Every update afterwards just asks "how long until that moment?" using your device's clock, so the display always corrects itself, even after being backgrounded.
10:00 → 600,000 msPress Start at 14:32:00 → end time = 14:42:00
At 14:38:15, remaining = 14:42:00 − 14:38:15 = 3:45
At 14:42:00, remaining = 0:00 → alarm plays
Adding time mid-countdown
Tapping Add 1 Min shifts the stored end time one minute later rather than restarting the countdown, so your progress isn't lost — the timer just keeps going with a longer runway.
Common timer lengths
The presets above cover most everyday cases — here's what people typically use each for.
| Preset | Shown as | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 min | 1:00 | Quick reminder, tea steep |
| 3 min | 3:00 | Brushing teeth, egg timer |
| 5 min | 5:00 | Short break, resting between sets |
| 10 min | 10:00 | Meditation session, quick tidy-up |
| 20 min | 20:00 | Power nap, workout circuit |
| 30 min | 30:00 | Study block, cooking a roast check |
| 60 min | 1:00:00 | Full-hour work or focus block |
Want a fixed work/rest cycle instead of a single countdown? The pomodoro timer handles repeating focus sessions, and the interval timer alternates work and rest periods automatically.
Who uses it, and for what
- Home cooks timing a simmer, a rest period, or a batch in the oven.
- Students & remote workers running a focused work block without a phone app.
- Coaches & trainers timing exercise sets, rest periods, or drills.
- Teachers running a fullscreen countdown on a classroom screen for quizzes or activities.
- Anyone who just needs a reliable "count down and alert me" without installing anything.
Counting up instead of down? Use the stopwatch. Need to count down to an exact date and time — a deadline, a launch, a birthday — rather than a length of time? That's what the countdown timer is for.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use the online timer?
Set hours, minutes and seconds — or tap a preset like 5 or 20 minutes — then press Start. The countdown runs live and sounds an alarm when it reaches zero.
Does the timer stay accurate if I switch to another tab?
Yes. The countdown is calculated from the exact time it should end, not by counting ticks one by one, so it corrects itself the moment you return to the tab even if the browser slowed the timer down in the background.
Will I actually hear the alarm when the timer finishes?
Yes, as long as your device volume is up and the mute button hasn't been toggled on. Browsers require a click or tap on the page before they allow sound, and pressing Start satisfies that requirement.
Can I add more time after the timer has started?
Yes. Tap Add 1 Min at any point, running or paused, to extend the current countdown by a minute without resetting it to zero.
Is there a limit on how long I can set the timer for?
Hours can be set up to 99, so the practical maximum is just under 100 hours. For everyday use — cooking, breaks, workouts — there's no meaningful limit.
How is this different from the countdown timer tool?
This timer counts down a length of time you set, like 10 minutes. The countdown timer counts down to a specific calendar date and time, like a deadline or event.
Is it free and private?
It is completely free with no sign-up. The countdown, display and alarm all run in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
Accuracy & sources
The countdown uses standard time arithmetic: your set duration becomes an end timestamp, and every update simply measures the gap between that timestamp and the current time, exactly as shown in how the countdown stays accurate. There is no external service or proprietary logic involved, and every worked example on this page has been independently verified by hand.
No formal time standard governs how long a countdown timer runs — that's simply the length you choose. Written and reviewed by Fletcher Langley, and re-checked whenever the tool changes — last reviewed August 2026.
