What this business days calculator does

This tool answers a question that comes up in scheduling, contracts, and shipping estimates: how many working days are there between one date and another? Pick a start date and an end date, and it returns the count of weekdays in that range — with weekends removed automatically. If you have specific holidays to account for, add them and they're removed from the total too.

It's built for the cases where counting on a calendar by hand is easy to get wrong — a "5 business days" shipping promise that starts on a Thursday, a 30-day notice period that needs to land on a weekday, or a deadline that has to skip Christmas and New Year's. Those are exactly the situations where an off-by-one mistake causes real problems.

How to use it

Three fields, no button — the total updates as you edit any of them.

  1. Enter your start date.Pick it from the calendar or type it directly.
  2. Enter your end date.It must fall on or after the start date, or the calculator will show a warning instead of a result.
  3. Add any holidays (optional).List holiday dates, one per line or separated by commas. Only the ones that fall on a weekday inside your range change the count.
  4. Read and reuse the result.Copy it to a message, print it for a file, or download it as a CSV row for your records.

How business days are calculated

Every day in the range is either a weekday (Monday through Friday) or a weekend day (Saturday or Sunday). The calculator counts the whole range in complete weeks — each contributing exactly 5 business days — then checks the few leftover days individually. Any holiday you've listed is then subtracted from the weekday total if it falls inside the range.

Worked example · Thu, Dec 24, 2026 to Sat, Jan 2, 2027, with 2 holidays
Range = 10 calendar days
Weekdays before holidays = 7 (3 weekend days removed)
Dec 25 (Fri) and Jan 1 (Fri) are both weekdays inside the range → 2 holidays excluded
7 − 2 = 5 business days

Which end is counted

Both the start date and the end date count toward the total, as long as each one is a weekday and isn't listed as a holiday. A range that starts on a Saturday simply doesn't add that day to the count — there's no separate "include start date" switch to configure.

Long date ranges

Because the calculation works in whole weeks rather than checking each day one by one, a range spanning many months or several years returns just as fast as a one-week range, and the answer stays exact.

Need the gap in plain calendar days instead, with no weekday logic? The time duration calculator gives that. Counting toward a single future date instead of between two fixed ones? Try time from now.

Who uses it, and for what

  • Project managers & ops teams setting deadlines that need to land on a working day, or checking how many working days remain before one.
  • Shipping & fulfillment teams converting a "3–5 business day" promise into an actual delivery date.
  • HR & legal calculating notice periods, response windows, or contractual deadlines defined in business days rather than calendar days.
  • Finance & billing working out payment terms like "net 15 business days" from an invoice date.

Scheduling a meeting across time zones once you know which working day you need? The meeting planner lines up working hours for everyone involved. For a plain count of days already elapsed since a date, see time ago.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate business days between two dates?

Count every day from the start date to the end date, then remove Saturdays and Sundays. What's left is the business day total. This calculator does that instantly and also lets you exclude specific holiday dates.

Does it exclude weekends automatically?

Yes. Every Saturday and Sunday inside the date range is removed from the total without any setup — that's what separates a business day count from a plain calendar day count.

Can I exclude public holidays too?

Yes. Add holiday dates in the optional holidays field, one per line or separated by commas. Any holiday that falls on a weekday inside your range is subtracted from the total and shown in the holidays excluded metric.

Are the start and end dates both included?

Yes, both count if they fall on a weekday and aren't listed as a holiday. If the start date is a Saturday, for example, it doesn't add to the business day total.

What happens if the end date is before the start date?

The calculator shows a warning and withholds a result rather than displaying a negative number. Use the swap button to fix it, or re-enter the dates in order.

Does it work for ranges spanning several years?

Yes. The calculation uses a weekly pattern rather than checking every single day, so multi-year ranges return instantly and accurately.

Is it free, and is my data private?

It's completely free with no sign-up. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — your dates and any holidays you enter are never uploaded or stored on a server.
