Minutes-to-Hours Conversion Chart

Every minute from 1 to 60, converted to decimal hours and to hours-and-minutes, in one scannable table — plus the longer durations people actually search for, and the one notation mix-up that causes real errors.

By Reviewed 7 min read

Key takeaways

  • 60 minutes = 1 hour, exactly. Every other minute value is a fraction of that.
  • To get decimal hours, divide minutes by 60: 90 minutes ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours.
  • To get hours-and-minutes format, keep the whole hours and leave the remainder as minutes: 90 minutes = 1 hr 30 min.
  • A decimal hour and an h:mm reading look alike but aren't the same thing — 1.30 hours is 1 hour 18 minutes, not 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • The full chart below covers every minute from 1–60, plus common durations beyond an hour.

A meeting invite says the call runs 105 minutes. A treadmill display reads 42 minutes into a session. A video export shows a runtime of 138 minutes. None of those numbers means much until it's converted to hours — and doing that conversion correctly, in the right format, is easy to get subtly wrong.

This page is the reference chart: every minute value from 1 to 60 converted both ways — as a decimal (1.5 hours) and as hours-and-minutes (1 hr 30 min) — plus the longer durations people actually look up. If you want the reasoning behind the conversion rather than a lookup table, How to Convert Minutes to Hours (and Back) walks through the method.

01The chart: 1–60 minutes

Every minute of the hour, converted to a decimal (rounded to two places) and to hours-and-minutes. The fourth column flags the handful of values that reduce to a clean, memorable fraction of an hour.

Decimal values are rounded to two places — that rounding is fine for reading a chart, but it is not the specific rounding standard payroll systems use for pay periods; for that, see the Payroll Minutes-to-Decimal Conversion Chart.

03Beyond an hour: common longer durations

Not everything fits inside one hour. Flights, workdays, and long meetings run past 60 minutes — here are the durations people convert most often.

1,440 minutes is a full calendar day — for the equivalent counts in hours across a week, month, and year, see How Many Hours Are in a Day, Week, Month, and Year?

04Reading a decimal hour value

A decimal hour splits the hour into 100 equal parts rather than 60. To turn any decimal hour back into minutes, take just the part after the decimal point and multiply it by 60. For 0.75 hours, that's 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 0.75 hours is 45 minutes past the whole hour. For 0.20 hours, it's 0.20 × 60 = 12 minutes.

The reverse — minutes to decimal — is the same division shown throughout the chart above: minutes ÷ 60.

05Minutes as clean fractions of an hour

Most minute counts land on an awkward decimal, but a handful reduce to a fraction worth memorizing, because they come up constantly in scheduling: 15 minutes is a quarter hour (1⁄4), 20 minutes is a third (1⁄3), 30 minutes is a half (1⁄2), 40 minutes is two-thirds (2⁄3), and 45 minutes is three-quarters (3⁄4). The full chart above flags every value from 1–60 that reduces this cleanly.

06Three ways to write the same duration

The same length of time shows up in three common formats, and each fits a different context:

  • Decimal hours — 1.5 hr. Standard in spreadsheets, timesheets, and anywhere durations get added or averaged, because decimals are simple to sum.
  • Hours and minutes, spelled out — 1 hr 30 min. The clearest form for a human reading a schedule or itinerary at a glance.
  • Colon notation — 1:30. Compact, common in video players, timers, and stopwatches — but only unambiguous with context, since 1:30 could also be read as a clock time.

07The mistake this chart prevents

Decimal hours and h:mm are not interchangeable

1.30 hours is 1 hour and 18 minutes (0.30 × 60 = 18) — not 1 hour 30 minutes. 1 hour 30 minutes written in decimal is 1.5 hours, not 1.30. The two formats look almost identical and get swapped constantly, especially when someone converts a timesheet total by eye instead of by the actual chart above.

The safest habit: never write a decimal hour value using minute-style numbers after the point. If the number after the decimal is meant to represent minutes directly, it isn't a decimal hour — it's h:mm, and it belongs on the other side of a colon, not a period.

08Where this conversion matters

Timesheets and payroll are the biggest source of this exact conversion, but they come with their own rounding rules for pay periods — covered in How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours for Payroll. Outside payroll, the same math shows up in project time-tracking, billing by the hour, workout and screen-time trackers, and any spreadsheet that needs to sum up minute-based durations into a single hours total.

09Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. The whole number is the hours; multiply what's left after the decimal point by 60 to get the remaining minutes. 90 minutes divided by 60 is 1.5, which is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

What is 90 minutes in hours?

90 minutes is 1.5 hours, or 1 hour and 30 minutes.

What is 1.5 hours in minutes?

1.5 hours is 90 minutes. Multiply the decimal part, 0.5, by 60 to get 30, then add that to the 1 full hour (60 minutes).

Is 1.30 hours the same as 1 hour 30 minutes?

No. 1.30 hours is 1 hour and 18 minutes, because 0.30 × 60 = 18. 1 hour 30 minutes is written as 1.5 hours in decimal form, not 1.30.

How many minutes are in an hour?

60 minutes make one hour.
